In the classroom…
The dust is settling from this years Easter break and its now time for us to do the first of five ASI Level 1 Surf Instructor courses this year. We have five young surfers on our current course and they are keen and willing to make sure that our next batch of surf coach’s is going to be straight out of the top drawer. This group is mainly from the local area but one guy has made it all the way from Scotland. One day I suspect these courses will be able to be taken over the Internet but for now it can be a real sacrifice for some people. Good on them and the very best of luck.
In the shop…
Meanwhile over in the boutique new clobber is arriving every day and today it was the postman’s pleasure to bring us our brand new posters and gift vouchers. The gift vouchers are available for any amount and can be bought online or through the store. They make a great gift for any surfer who is hoping to improve their surfing with a few surfing lessons this summer but they can also exchanged for surf hire and anything in the shop.
One of the other things to arrive this week are the brand-new Robie Pro Max changing robe. These little beauties are fully waterproof, windproof and will have you dry in no time at all. Better than that the whole concept was created by a local St Ives based company. So not just a pretty harbour but a hive of industry and creativity also.
In the surf…
It’s looking like the weather is set to continue for a week at least. Plus we have been blessed with amazing surf this month so far and it looks like it’s going to continue for a week at well.
Fingers crossed eh?
What do surf coaches do in the off season?
It’s a question that gets asked a lot during the summer. While we do work very hard during the summer the surroundings and work environment are an excellent compensation – not many people can say they work at the beach. Or go barefoot to work for that matter.
So what do we do in the winter? Most of our surf coaches use surf coaching to fund their winter travels. As good as Cornwall can be in the winter – and winter is the time when we get some of our best surf – it does get cold and even when the surf is pumping the thought of putting on a wetsuit that you left to dry in the rain or festering in a bucket in the back of the van is enough to make you run to the travel agents.
This winter Poppy is in Australia doing some coaching on the Gold Coast, Freddie is in Bali surfing in 29° water and Callum has gone to Nicaragua taking photos at Thunderbomb Surf Camp. Even I managed to snag a quick trip away to an Indonesian island with ridiculously good surf.
If you think you might like to spend the summer at the beach and your winter…uh….. on another beach then you might want to consider becoming a surf coach.
We have lots of ASI Level 1 Surf Coach courses coming up over the next year starting in March so where will you spend your winter?
Can you give me a couple of tips?
We need a favour….
2015 is in full swing, summer is just around the corner and soon we will be dishing out surf tips on a daily basis again. It’s an exciting time of year and we are full of anticipation for another season at the beach.
We want to make sure that the whole surf coaching experience is as good as possible and to continually evolve as coaches. We also have a few new ideas that we will be sharing with you soon and we want to make sure that we don’t miss anything out or overlook something inadvertently.
And this is where you come in! Please can you take a couple of minutes to answer the following question.
What are the two surf tips that have helped your surfing the most?
It doesn’t matter whether you are a beginner and the surf tip seemed really basic like ‘head down when you paddle for a wave’ or if you’re a ripper and the advice was super advanced. It doesn’t even matter if the advice was from us or someone who just happened to see you surf – we’d just like to know what it was and how it effective it was.
Please just type your tips into the comments area below.
Thanks for helping.
A.S.I. Surf Course Success
Four more candidates successfully passed their A.S.I Level 1 Surf Course last weekend (5th – 7th September 2014) and are now getting their first taste of what it’s like to be a surf instructor. We had a really strong field for this months course – all candidates had a background in lifeguarding or coaching and all were strong watermen (and women) – and due to the practical nature of the course they all passed with flying colours.
So good luck to Ben, Liz, Matt and Max – we will look forward to seeing you in the water getting the next generation of surfers up & riding for years to come.
