Video Analysis

The Gwithian Academy of Surfing is offering a new service for surfers who wish to fulfill their surfing potential but can't get down to us. All you have to do is send a video or DVD of your surfing and a list of your surfing goals to us for a full evaluation of your surfing performance. Our BSA Level 4 coach will assess your surfing and send you a report of your strengths and weaknesses with tips and exercises that will take your surfing to the next level.

Billy Norways

Billy has been with the accademy for 4 years. His surfing offers testimony to the importance of video analysis.

For example:

In frame 1 Billy is coming out of the waves power pocket and is beginning a maneouver (cutback) that will take him back in the critical section (whitewater). In frame 2 he has applied considerable pressure to his inside rail and is fully commited to the turn. His legs are compressed giving torque to power through the maneouvre. In frame 3 he begins to decompress his body as he prepares to reconnect with the whitewater in frame 4.

This is clearly a good cutback however it can be improved.

As in all sporting actions the set-up is the key stage. Billy approaches the maneouver from the bottom third of the wave. However if he initiates the turn from the top half or third of the wave he will give himself more space to perform the maneouver. This will also allow him to travel down the face of the wave where he can harness more of the waves energy and project higher into the critical section. This 'figure of eight' action will give him the potential to perform a more dynamic whitewater rebound which in turn will give hime more speed to take into his next turn.
