Our Surfing Instructors

All of our coaches are Academy of Surfing Instructors approved surf instructors, have lifeguard awards and are qualified first aiders. We also ask that our instructors keep up to date with the latest coaching techniques and take part in Sportscoach UK coaching workshops whenever possible. In addition to this all of our surf coaches are cleared for work by the Criminal Records Bureau.

Gwithian Academy of Surfing is an Academy of Surfing Instructors Accredited Surf School and abides by their high international standards for surf school operations.

Tyson Greenaway

Tyson has been surfing for 24 years and is a competitive surfer who is currently ranked 3rd in the British Seniors (over 28's) and Masters (over 35's) categories. In 2009 he competed for England in the European Surfing Championships coming third overall in the Seniors category which helped the England Team to a fourth place finish.

Tyson, a Level 4 surf coach and ASI Trainer Assessor, has been coaching for 11 years. Tyson has coached the British Junior Squad in 2003, 2007 and 2008 and from 2005 to 2010 sat on the British Surfing Association's coaching committee.

Ian Gabbitas

Ian begins his eighth year of coaching at the academy hot on the heels of a round the world surf trip - Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Thailand. This fella loves the beach and when he's not delivering surfing lessons you can be sure to see him practising the maneuvers that he learnt this winter.

Gabbi is a Level 3 coach and an ASI Trainer Assessor.

Dan Morse

Dan has been an everpresent coach at the academy for the last four years. A gifted bodyboarder, fisherman and surfer - he spends so much time in the sea he's grown scales.

Dan is a Level 2 ASI Surf coach.

Chris Ranford

Now in his seventh year as a surfing coach, all round waterman Chris Ranford has been a bodyboarder, surfer and general beach lover for 17 years now. It was about time he put his expertise and experience into coaching!

Currently studying Oceanography at Bournmouth University. Chris is a Level 3 coach.

In between organising some of the largest partys in Cornwall under his pseudonym 'My Heroes Killed Cowboys' and 6 month long yoga sessions in the depths of India and Sri Lanka Chris finds the time to put the next batch of surfers through their paces.

Chris has been coaching for 5 years and is a Level 2 coach.
