Learn the basics of surfing or fine tune your technique with a surfing lesson at the Gwithian Academy of Surfing – one of Cornwall’s longest running and most highly regarded surf schools.
At our surf school we take surf tuition seriously and work hard to make sure that your surfing lesson is as fun and rewarding as possible. For this reason all of our coaches are fully qualified as surf coaches, lifeguards and first aiders and two have even coached the British Junior Surfing Team on a number of occasions. A surf lesson with us can help you to achieve all of your surfing goals.
Gwithian Academy of Surfing is an Academy of Surfing Instructors Accredited Surf School (one of only three in Britain) that operates from Gwithian – the Northernmost point of St Ives Bay – and is very close to the towns of Hayle, St Ives and Penzance.
Gwithian – the Perfect Beach for a Surfing Lesson
Due to the gently sloping nature of the beach the surf forms and breaks very slowly giving aspiring surfers more time to get to their feet.
Owing to the generous ‘fetch’ of the Atlantic Ocean Gwithian Beach gets rideable surf year round.
Thanks to the Gulf Stream and the natural heat retaining properties of St Ives Bay the sea water is comparatively warm.
Gwithian is a beautiful place!
The Premier Surf School in Cornwall
Our surf school is run from a purpose built beach-side location where we can offer changing facilities, a classroom for teaching surfing theory and facilities for video analysis within an easy level walk of the shoreline. The surf school is right next to a large car park so parking is always available.
Gwithian Academy of Surfing offers group and private surfing lessons for all levels – beginners, intermediate and advanced- and for all ages. We regularly cater for families, backpackers, children, schools and corporate groups. Accommodation can also be provided in our beautiful seaside village to help make your stay the perfect surfing holiday.
What Our Customers Say
Big thanks to Tom and Freddie for the best surf coaching there is in Cornwall. Every time the boys rest on the sand, they are given specific instructions about how to improve, not just cast into the water and ignored, as is the case with other schools I’ve seen. See you next year gents. - Andy Russell.
Just wanted to say a big thank you to you all. My son Elliot has had a fantastic time – you have taken him from complete beginner to up and riding most waves in a week – the lesson package was super value and the loan of more advanced boards to practice on made this a great deal. - Brian Hughes.
I just wanted to say that the surf lesson my friend Hayley and I had yesterday morning was brilliant, it was really enjoyable and your team who teach the classes are so friendly, helpful and just fab. - Emily
