How to stand up on a surfboard – the easy (ish) way

Tyson Greenaway

The best way to stand up on a surfboard, without doubt, is to utilise the ‘pop up’ method. This is where you catch the wave, perform a press-up and then whip your feet into place in one seamless motion.

This is an explosive body movement and understandably not everyone can do this when they first come along for a surfing lesson. It requires a good power to weight ratio, strong shoulders and good balance but if you don’t have these then all is not lost. There is a slightly slower but equally effective technique called the ‘two phase’ (sometimes the ‘knees method’) that is great for surfers who maybe aren’t quite strong enough yet or perhaps not as fit as they used to be.

We encourage everyone to try the ‘pop up’ first as this is the gold standard but the outcome for either method is the same: to stand on the surfboard and get a good long ride to the shore.

I was looking at some footage of one of our surfing lessons the other day and this young surfers technique really stood out. She’s not quite strong enough to do the pop up consistently but she illustrates the ‘two phase’ technique beautifully well.

How to stand up on a surfboard using the ‘two phase’ technique

As always choose a nice looking whitewater or gently breaking ‘green’ wave and catch it as you usually would then:

  1. lift your chest off the surfboard with your hands placed firmly of the deck just below your shoulders
  2. bring your knees up the deck of the surfboard and place them just behind (about six inches) where your hands are
  3. bring your front foot through the gap between your arms and place it in the centre of your surfboard between your hands – lift your head up (seriously, it makes it a lot easier) if you need to make more space for your leg to come through
  4. move your backside over the surfboards rail as you twist your shoulders
  5. keep your head centred over the surfboard as you let go of the rails
  6. tahdaaaaaah – your standing up!

We’re Open – Summer Starts Now!

Tyson Greenaway

Another winter draws to a close, spring is here and the surf academy is once again open for the summer season. Our coaches are back from their winter sojourns to sub-tropical paradises and are refreshed, recharged and ready to start the 2015 summer surfing season off with a bang.

The shop has been painted, we are buried in new stock from Quiksilver, Gul, Torq surfboards and Ocean & Earth and a new floor has been laid – it’s nice and soft underfoot and has been getting rave reviews from the first of our customers! We also have some lovely new neighbours in the Rockpool Seafood Cafe providing piping hot coffee and delicious seafood & burgers for any surfers passing through.

In short life is good.

We will be open every day from 10am to 6pm from now until the end of October so if you want some surfing lessons in beautiful St Ives Bay, surf hire or a nice new wetsuit then pop in and we can fix you up.

And if you can’t get here but know someone who is coming to Cornwall why not treat them to a surfing gift voucher. They are redeemable against surfing lessons, hire and anything in the shop. Check out our Gift Vouchers here.

Sporting Summer

Tyson Greenaway

It’s been a wonderful summer of sport so far. It seems like every time I switch on the telly there is some amazing sporting event taking place. If you witnessed the 4th set of the Wimbledon mens final, the Dutch dismantling the World Champions Spain at the World Cup or the start of the Tour de France you’ll know what I mean. Watching sportsmen and women in the peak of physical condition pushing their bodies to the limits is enough to give you goosebumps at times.

And if you want to see some of the worlds best surfers in action then you’re in for a treat. The J-Bay Open is on in a couple of days at Jeffreys Bay, South Africa and because there is a very small time difference combined with the flawless perfection of the surf this is a great event for British surfers to watch via the ASP webcast.

We will be showing it in the shop if you happen to be passing but if not, seriously, watch the webcast. It’s gonna be epic.

May Bank Holiday & Half Term Opening Times

Tyson Greenaway

Spring is nearly behind us and we are surely heading into another, ahem, Barbeque summer at the surf school. Just writing it has almost certainly put a jinx on it but ho, we are tremendously happy here whatever the weather.

The surf has been cracking for the last couple of weeks so lets hope this good run will continue. Not that we have been surfing anywhere near as much as usual – our time has been spent fruitfully getting the surf school ready for a manic period of surfing lessons in Gwithian during the Bank Holidays and Half Term holidays. A lick of paint here, new doors there and a new tarmac drive. The surf school is looking good and, thankfully, ready for Half Term.

The surf school will be open every day from 10am to 6pm for surfing lessons, surf hire and SUP lessons. Even if you just need a bar of wax or just want to pop in for a chat then come on over. We might even put the kettle on.
