Not me, the guy who I am skivvying for in the flats. Turns out the swine can paint, surf, is clever enough to get into Camborne School of Mines (very hard – only 30 spaces a year worldwide for the course he is on) and he knows his way around a guitar.

Trago Mills
Bugger, missed some pretty good surf today as once again I was chained to a roller/bit of sandpaper/hammer for the best part of 12 hours. The only respite was a brief sojourn to the Falmouth branch of Trago Mills.
I cant quite decide whether I love or hate the place – Trago that is. Its got a lot going for it. You can buy almost anything you could want from kitchens to carpet to light bulbs to sweets to shoes and all at very reasonable, dare I say it, rock bottom prices.
The problem is the quiet desperation of every staff member. I suspect they are joyful people most of the time but are transformed by a Trago staff manual that demands that all staff must routinely ignore customers by pretending they are doing something important. This ‘something important’ can be anything from shouting across the shop floor about the crapness of their own senior and middle management or just opening one of their work desks to gaze at a cupboard door festooned with soft pornography that they have lovingly sellotaped to it.
The overall atmosphere is not unlike stepping back in time to when all pubs were dark, had sticky carpet and a ‘Big D’ peanut dispenser that upon selling the last pack revealed a naked lady. There is an added political dimension as the owner is a diehard UKIP supporter so most of the inside walls, and occasionally the outside walls, feature some anti-Europe propaganda.
After it was off to Rick Steins newly opened chippy. Polite staff, clean airy surroundings and beautiful food. Its just a shame that they don’t sell vinyl matt magnolia in 10L tubs.
Come on Rick, sort it out.
So yeah, basically the prices do keep you going to Trago but its kind of like a guilty pleasure as well. A ‘can’t live with them, can’t live without them’ type thing perhaps?
New board
Hmmm, early surfs suggest that this board could be an absolute beauty. Does all the simple stuff well (you wouldn’t believe how many boards don’t) and even an old duffer such as myself can attempt some of the not so simple stuff. I still don’t complete many of the harder moves but its a start!
I’ll try and get some video.
More painting and whatnot down at the surf school today. Beautiful weather down there as well. If you got out of the breeze then you could get a tan I reckon. My nose is burnt to a crisp!
The Surfers Life
I promised that this blog was going to be about surfing and I think I have been led astray a bit lately. Most of my posts seem to mention decorating at one point or another and I have a horroible feeling its going to be mentioned again today.
Finally finished the laundry room that I started a whole month ago just as I had returned from Bali (and that seems like light years away) and the flats are, in general, coming along nicely. The main consequence of all this decorating is that I am missing out on a few surfs here and there. From the sounds of it Porthmeor was firing this morning but from the forecast I reckon Gwithian is going to have some nice little waves tomorrow. Can’t wait as I have just forked out a few quid for a new DHD Project 15. My nemesis (every surfer has a nemesis – another surfer who can by their very presence guarantee a lousy surf. They don’t have to do anything, they don’t have to say anything, they just have to be within a mile or so. Just a glimpse of their car as they check the surf is sometimes all it takes) got one a few months ago and was raving about it so I felt I should fight fire with fire Since I handed over my wallet to Trevorua at DTL it has either been flat or completely off its grid but tomorrow could be the day. Fingers crossed, it’ll be a flyer.
Below is a bit of info on the board and some Aussie geezer surfing one. I doubt I will be surfing it like that but if Slater can get a world title at 40 yrs then there is hope for me yet.
Not much though, obviously.

Shocking surf at Gwithers today so it’s back to the grindstone getting everything ready in the flats. Basically this means helping the carpenter to saw my fingers off and throwing dust-sheets over the furniture in anticipation of tomorrows painting bonanza.
Meanwhile in one of the few bits of time I had spare I was off up to Newquay to order this summers tee shirts and hoodies.
One thing I am having trouble with is choosing which designs to use and to be honest I could do with your help (yes, you – the reader).
We have got some new designs in for this summer which are shown above. It would be great to know what you think of them. The leash and lightning bolts are my favourites at the mo but the wave is growing on me too.
But what would you prefer? And what colour tees? It doesn’t have to be the ones I have shown here, they can literally be any colour tee with any colour print.
Any help would be gratefully received.
